Makeout mixtape
Everyone has lists like “The Best Songs to Have Sex to” or “Top 10 Love-makin Jams.” I like mixes like that, but I like to burn makeout-mixes a lot more. The act of kissing often needs a slight nudging while the couple is in between awkward conversation and glancing at each other with soft smiles. The following tunes are guaranteed to ease such feelings and get your tongues rolling. I kept the tracks in a certain order to follow the mood. Ideally you’ll be having the shy glances on track one, and then by track 12, you’ll probably only have your undies on.
PS - When envsioning the order of these tracks, I hope you don’t imagine some poorly staged scene in a romatic comedy. Just try to picture your normal self and atmosphere with the music.
1. Duncan Sheik - I Wouldn’t Mind
You’ve each got a glass of wine or beer can in your hands while chatting and sitting on the couch or your bed. Duncan Sheik’s (yes, the Duncan Sheik) simple song comes on. The quick lyrics “you and i \ hanging on every kiss \ on our lips” will certainly give both of you an unspoken nudge.
2. Brand New - Soco Amaretto Lime
Besides being my second favorite band, Brand New also has a amazing makeout-worthy song. I love how it starts out with the sound of a scratch on an old record player.
3. Dashboard Confessional - For You to Notice
You might be rolling your eyes after reading this artist, but get over it. Dashboard Confessional wrote out my angsty emo moods so perfectly. He’s the king of heartbreak and feelings, and this song is too perfect. Its upbeat melody also makes things playful.
4. Bright Eyes - You Will. You? Will. You? Will. You? Will.
Oh Conor, he has written many a good song about being with or losing a girl. Leave it to him to make a song that makes me smile everytime I hear it.
5. The Cardigans - After All… (Demo ‘93)
Nina Persson’s voice is stunning. It’s got this amazing sound to it that makes me melt and feel tingly inside. I think it’s a nice balance following Bright Eyes.
6. Sleater-Kinney - Modern Girl
The SK can do no wrong. The mellow and lovely guitar strumming in the background will make anyone relax. Pair that with Carrie Brownstein’s haunting vocals, and you’ve both probably started to move out of the upright-sitting position to lying down on the couch on top of each other.
7. Kevin Divine - Just Stay
I really think this needs no explination once you listen to it.
8. Rilo Kiley - The Moneymaker
Jenny Lewis singing about a moneymaker should make this song a mainstay on every playlist. The tempo and guitar riffs are just raw enough to get you a little farther with you partner. Clothes are still on, but I’m sure shirts are getting untucked.
9. Owen - Who Found Who’s Hair In Who’s Bed
I love Owen aka Mike Kinsella. What that man can do with a guitar is simply phenomenal. This song might not be the most “romantic” as it’s about infidelity, but seriously, are you really going to be paying attention to the lyrics at this point in the mix?
10. Le Tigre - Eau D’Bedroom Dancing
The pace and sounds of this song are incredible. I think it’ll allow for lovely gyrating and dry humping.
11. Boyskout - New Black
“Now we’re here for the pleasure, but the pleasure’s all mine.” — nuff said.
12. Weezer - El Scorcho
Don’t call me crazy just yet. Lots of Weezer songs are sexy (well, up until The Green Album). This song needs to be at the end when your foreplay is already underway or just about to launch. You and your partners will give each other sweet glances when the song starts because everyone should have a small spot in their heart for “El Scorcho.” If you want to be a romantic, it also has the lyric “I’ve fallen for you.”
Now go forth and prosper, young friends and create your own Makeout Mixtapes. Good luck.
